Off-duty veteran NYPD cop commits suicide, ninth this year

A veteran NYPD cop became the ninth police officer to commit suicide this year when he shot himself in the head in his Queens home Wednesday evening — just a day after another NYPD officer killed himself in Yonkers, police sources told The Post.

The 56-year-old officer, who has worked for the department for more than 20 years, shot himself at his Laurelton home soon after 6 p.m., the sources said.

Medics responded and rushed him to North Shore University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, sources said.

A neighbor on the leafy block in the Queens neighborhood said it was tragic to hear of the suicide.

“This is heartbreaking to see a family torn apart no matter the situation,” said Brenden Betts, 23, a neighbor who works for the Department of Transportation.

“Mental health awareness is probably the number one critical issue not being spoken of in this city today.”

The tragic suicide comes just a day after off-duty officer Johnny Rios fatally shot himself at about 3 a.m. Tuesday in the home he shared with his fiancée and her children.
